Philippi's place in history is anchored by The First Land Battle of the Civil War, which happened in Philippi on June 3, 1861. This battle is commemorated in the annual "Blue and Gray Reunion," a historical re-enactment. The event is held the first weekend of June each year.
Philippi has many reminders of its beginnings as the county seat of Barbour County, Virginia, the most visible reminder being the famed Covered Bridge. The Covered Bridge, the only two-laned covered bridge in the federal highway system, leads into an attractive and progressive community of locally owned businesses, professional services, and safe residential areas. The Philippi Historical District and the Philippi Covered Bridge are listed on the National Civil War Discovery Trail.

Alderson-Broaddus College, a private liberal arts institution is located on the hill overlooking Philippi. A-B became a part of the community in 1909, and students come to A-B from all over the country and world.
